Background: Lontano (Italian for "far away") is a songwriting project featuring Anthony Dettori (The Sunburys) and Roz Pappalardo (women in docs), who live over 1000 miles apart, but share Italian heritage and a passion for spacious, earthy, alt-country storytelling. Lontano’s songs, written by remote collaboration, explore the physics of human connection. The band’s first album, Lontano embodied a literal interpretation of their name, looking at ‘distance’ and how it impacts on the emotional gravity which tugs at the space between people. With Depending on you, Lontano’s theme takes on further nuance, as they delve into the ways that ‘time’ (our experiences, events and memories) can colour our emotional landscape. This has proven to be a rich line of inquiry, giving rise to narratives based on the importance of appreciating our moments, synchronicity, and the constant frisson of trying to generate wisdom from the relentless onset of maturity. Ahead of the album release, Lontano released Depending on you, 10 Fingers, Somewhere Highway as singles, as well as a radio edit of Déjà Vu (the album version of which comes with a language warning). Lontano’s approach to songwriting combines divergent perspectives in order to birth surprising new narratives that are neither fact nor fiction, but still viscerally personal, rich with meaning and salience. This philosophy is echoed in their arrangements, which feature intertwining lead vocals (with sublime harmonies and countermelodies) augmented by a masterful blend of simple acoustic guitar, lush instrumentation and authentic, heartfelt emotion. The result is a remarkable collection of engaging duets, and a compelling abstract of the human journey. The Lontano project serves to remind us that solidarity and mutual respect based on what we have in common can be more powerful than the differences in our circumstances, interests and attitudes.
