In his first independent record in over 20 years, Pete Murray is set to release his album, Longing. A passion project in the making for a decade, the album is a testament to the artist's belief that great music requires time. Longing is a collection of songs that Murray has been writing since 2014, carefully curated from a folder he aptly named "Unfinished." Over the years, he slowly worked on these songs, letting them evolve into a cohesive body of work.
Working with engineer Luke Palmer (of Dead Letter Circus), Murray dedicated three months to bringing the songs to life, with a clear goal of creating an album that people would love from start to finish. The album promises a rich and dynamic listening experience, with subtle pushes into new, yet familiar territory. While Murray didn't actively seek out influences for the album, he notes that there are "flavours" of Pink Floyd and Marvin Gaye throughout the body of work. Fans of his debut album, Feeler, will find similar qualities in Longing, as both albums were created with the same decade-long process.
Murray, who describes himself as "Confident, Individual, and Passionate" in 2025, is excited to be independent again and to own his masters. The album is a powerful statement from an artist who continues to create music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. The latest single from the album, Amy, is a hypnotic track with a unique sound, featuring a backbeat rhythm on the acoustic guitar and a 4-on-the-floor beat. The song, which Murray describes as being about "someone really special," was also engineered by Luke Palmer, who added keys and synth bass to the track.
As Murray embarks on a new tour in October, fans can look forward to a mix of new songs from Longing and old classics performed with his full band.
