“Art is life, art is essential, be poor, it’s okay, we’ll be okay"
The Mallacoota firestorm of New Year’s Eve ripped through the heart of our town. We sheltered as the crazed storm turned the day into night, and then two days later, sheltered and defended again as the skies turn black and the crimson embers rained and the great forest timbers fell like explosions around us.
Two months later, just as we started to see the regreening of the land, the birds returning, the critters sneaking out, burnt and hungry, humans meeting on the streets and cafes, making tentative song and dance, we, like you, had to shut ourselves in. Our masks are the same as in January, and our choirs are quiet, our art gallery empty, our kids staring at screens, like you'all.
But, out of the fire comes song and story, dance and image.
Mallacoota has a wonderful history of art making, music making and love of nature. We seek support in our Creative Recovery for workshops, concerts, instrument replacements, art material replacement, Strum Club, open mic, and for sharing our stories and our music and our art.
Thank you for your kind thoughts and donations. - Padma Newsome
